2023: Movies to hit the big screen

With 2022 coming to an end (finally), I am here to bring you the most highly anticipated movies of the new year.

Last year saw some cinematic masterpieces, from 'Top Gun: Maverick' to 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' (my personal favourite.)

We were also lucky, and patient enough, to see Avatar: The Way of Water. Despite being released late into the year, 16 December, James Cameron's highly anticipated second movie has ranked third in the top grossing movies of 2022, raking in a whopping $425,527,069 in just a matter of weeks.

Movies to look out for in 2023:

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

Starting with February, we will see Paul Rudd reprise his 'tiniest' and possibly most successful role in 'Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.'

After being delayed a year, Marvel fans will finally see their favourite insect-like hero take on the quantum realm.

With a cast including Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer, this one is certainly set for a box office success.

Let's hope it doesn't follow in the footsteps of 'Thor: Love and Thunder' which was, well, 'different.'

Scream VI

The third month of the year will see the release of the sequel nobody asked for, 'Scream VI.'

While 2022's 'Scream' film saw 'Wednesday's Jenny Ortega alongside the famous Coutney Cox, I think most of us would be in agreement that it was not good, nor was it scary.

This year's addition to the franchise will likely disappoint once again, especially without Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) who resigned due to, what she believed to be, unfair pay.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Here's the one you've all been waiting for (don't lie!) 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' is set to take the world by storm, with both younger ones and us child-like adults ready to see Chris Pratt destroy everything our favourite little Italian man stood for.

Will I probably love this movie? Yes, of course, it's Mario. Am I excited for Chris Pratt to take the stage, again? No. But, I am excited to see Charlie Day take on Luigi, alongside Jack Black and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Bowser.

I think this movie will have a little something for us all.

Fast X

Remember that film franchise that was about racing cars and family, but soon escalated to driving cars in space and too much family? The next 'Fast and Furious' movie, 'Fast X' is on it's way.

"Another one?" I hear you say, yes, another one. You might have heard this is the last of the franchise (finally), but you would be wrong. This will be part-one of two, with the later installment set for release next year.

I'm sure this one will be just as good as the last nine they made.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

A warning to Marvel fans, sit down whilst you read this one.

June will see a sequel to the oscar-award winning, and arguably best animation movie in history, 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.'

We will once again see Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy tackle the universe's worst enemies in a dream-like, comic book style film.

My favourite part of the previous installment was the easter eggs throughout the movie. Producers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, claim they added so many to the last movie that they lost count. Hard-core fans have estimated the total to be a whopping 116.

Oppenheimer

'Peaky Blinders' star, Cillian Murphy will star as physicist, J Robert Oppenheimer, who works amongst a team of scientists during the Manhattan Project, ultimately leading to the creation of the atomic bomb.

'Oppenheimer' already has high-expectations, and I think we can all agree that Cillian wouldn't let us down. After all, Thomas Shelby simply wouldn't allow it.

Dune: Part Two

For those of us who watched the first, I think we can all agree that 2021's 'Dune', starring Timothée Chamalet and Zendaya, felt more like a near three hour trailer for the next movie.

'Dune: Part Two' is set to cover the remainder of Frank Herbert’s 1965 creation and will see Paul Atreides choose between the love of his life and the fate of the universe.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

American filmmaker, Francis Lawrence, is returning once again to direct the next in the 'Hunger Games' saga, 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.'

Sadly, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are not set to reprise their roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, as this one is set much earlier in time.

Here, Suzanne Collins has offered us some context to the miserable fate that all 12 districts suffered in the original franchise.

This movie will follow the journey of an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, who we all know is not a very nice man.
