TikTok – That App That Everyone Seems Addicted To

Ah, TikTok. That place on the internet filled with cringey boys with no tops on dancing to whatever music is trending that week. The place where your ‘For You Page’ can be a mixture of repetitive dancing, brick layers showing off their moves and Bill from Shropshire demonstrating how he puts gravy on his toast.
It’s all very interesting.
But, here’s my question; why is everyone so addicted to this app?
A never-ending feed full of short videos, less than a minute long, one after another. Most of which aren’t actually funny, nor interesting. But as a TikTok user myself, we keep scrolling waiting for that next hilarious video, that might just be funny enough to make us blow extra air out of our nostrils; what many of you call ‘LOLing’.
From my experience, TikTok is a simple app, full of easy to watch clips which don’t use too much brain power for me to consume.
The perfect app for bedtime.
Many people take to this app in their hopes of becoming TikTok famous. After all, it doesn’t seem particularly difficult. Let’s have a look at the most famous TikTok users, together:
At No.4 we have Loren Gray, who has secured a whopping 48.3M million followers on this app. How? By lip-syncing to short clips of audio and being pretty. Seems like hard work.
At No.3 is Zach King who has 51.4m followers. Now, I actually really enjoy his videos. They clearly take a lot of work, using green screens, a tonne of computer skills and a whole team to create 1 short video. They are very impressive, most of the time.
In at No.2 is Addison Rae, with 65.9m followers, followed by Charli D’Amelio at No.1 with an insane 94.5m followers – And what do they both do? Yet again, they both lip sync and dance. Apparently, the two don’t get on particularly well, because you know, competition and all that – who’s the best at dancing for 45 seconds? It’s a close one.
Now we’ve established the hard work that creators go through to become so famous, how much do you think they get paid?
Apparently it’s between £0.01p-£0.03p per 1000 views – which may not seem like much, but when you’re Bella Poarch and you are raking in 341 million views for 1 single video of yourself bobbing your head to some Blackpool grime, then you’re really in for the money.
Now, although I think the way people can become ‘TikTok famous’ is crazy, that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy the app myself.
Where else would I learn how to remove a carpet stain, watch a grown man rub his face with ketchup AND see some awful dancing, all in the space of 2 minutes? Exactly.
Now, I don’t know why TikTok is as big and famous as it is, nor do I fully understand why Donald Trump is so frightened of it… but I have to admit, it’s definitely entertaining and can cater to all audiences, which is actually pretty impressive.
