*SPOILER ALERT*
The new Spider-Man game is out now and Play Station users are rushing to get their hands on it. At £49.99 on Amazon, the game is a pricey step up from the original game, which now sits at around £25 on most websites – but the question is: Is it worth it?
As a huge fan of the original game, it was definitely refreshing to have a new extended story line, as we dive deeper into the life of Miles Morales.
The story follows Miles along his journey to becoming the new Spider-man in NYC while Peter Parker is out of town – We watch him train, practice and defeat the biggest enemies in New York.
Before the release, I did question what universe the Play Station game was situated in – Could it be the same as the 2018 animation film ‘Into the Spider-verse’, where many people were introduced to Miles Morales for the first time, or was it a new world entirely?
Within the first 20 minutes it became clear that this is a whole new universe. So, it could be a while before we’re battling bad guys with the help of Gwen Stacey and Spider-Ham (AKA. Peter Porker).
My first thought when starting the game was how impressive it looked on screen. I’ve not been lucky enough to get my hands on the new PS5 just yet, so I had to play the PS4 version of the game and the improvement on game quality was immediately evident. The colours were sharp, and the people were more realistic.
It really is a piece of artwork.
Much of the gameplay and concept is very similar to the original game – with the same controls and similar basic story; with the obvious aim of defeating the bad guys.
One of the main differences was Morales’ ability to use Venom; a new weapon that only he has. His venom ability is extremely effective and fun to use – compared to Peter Parker’s basic fighting skills.
As you progress throughout the game, more and more suits are unlocked – which have different abilities and characteristics – along with different gadgets and skills which will dramatically improve your performance. Many of the suits are very impressive; and one even has a little ginger cat in his hood!
One downside for me was the length. The original game took around 20 hours to complete, whereas ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ takes just 12 hours. This is a huge decrease considering the price of the game. In my case, I finished the game within just 3 days.
Another flaw for me was the repetitiveness of the gameplay. Many of the missions are virtually the same, with only slight differences. That being said, each one is equally as fun, and the difficulty remains somewhat equal throughout the game.
It has to be said that ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ is a fantastic and well put-together story with terrific gameplay. It is definitely a must for anyone who enjoyed the first one. The footage is outstanding, and the new features would be exciting to anyone who has played the original. I would highly recommend this game to anyone, but I would warn them about the length of the game…
The game is definitely worth the price, especially if you are a big fan of the franchise. However, it doesn’t hurt to wait for a price drop, especially now Black Friday is coming up!
